Synergy for Multiple PC's

This is a bit of a change from my normal iPad / iPhone post. I have recently found an open-source product called Synergy.

Synergy is Free and Open Source Software that lets you easily share your mouse and keyboard between multiple computers, where each computer has it's own display. No special hardware is required, all you need is a local area network. Synergy is supported on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. I find it very useful at home where I have multiple PC's and I was continuously grabbing the wrong mouse, or typing on the wrong keyboard. The mouse scrolls seamlessly between screens and the keyboard is active on whichever screen the mouse is positioned. (There is one bug that will be resolved in the next release, the Ctrl+Alt+Del combination does not work properly on a Win7 Client)

All the computers you wish to control MUST be on the same local network.

Download Synergy for Windows, if you'll be running one or more Windows PC's in your setup, download and install the Synergy Installer for Windows on each PC. (The current version is 1.4.2 beta.) There is a version for Mac OS X and various Linux versions as well.

Install Synergy and run it as Administrator if you are using Windows 7 (Right click Synergy and select Run as Administrator). Your server is one with a mouse and keyboard attached, select configure interactively and Configure. You can then move the screens around to the correct positions (up to 15 screens 5 x 3).

Once you are happy with this select start. Now do this on all clients and get them working.

You can new set this up as a service on all the Windows machines. This will auto start the services every time you start Windows. Do this by running Synergy in Administrator mode and selecting Edit, Services and then select Install (server on the server, and client on the clients).

You can now remove all the mouses and keyboards (except on Win 7 clients if you need Ctrl+Alt+Del to login)

It is a fantastic time saving tool, and it just works!
